Streetwatching

Other than an uptick in sidewalk traffic and a lot of out-of-state cars crammed to the rafters with dorm room gear, you might not notice that the students are back in town.

You can, however, spot the “first-year” subspecies by their characteristic behavior: they travel in herds, for security.

During my track workout at the high school this morning, I got to watch all of the upperclassmen arrive for their first day of school. (The freshmen had to go in at the regular time, everyone else started at 10:06 a.m.) I observed that almost all of the kids arrived in groups of three or more. Only one or two kids walked up to the school alone, and I had a feeling they weren’t the cool kids.
