The Christmastime kitten

This will be Iz’s second Christmas with us; he was adopted on the 27th, two years ago. This year, his normal hosts when we travel are also going to be away for the holidays, so we have a bit of a conundrum.

  • We could bring him with us. He’s a pretty good cat in the car for short trips, but this is a four-hour drive, much longer than he’s ever done before. And there’s the risk that he will decide my allergic-to-cats sister-in-law is his new best friend.
  • He could piggy-back on whatever dog-sitting the famous dog will have. This seems unlikely.
  • We could find someone who would come here at least once a day to feed him and play with him for a little while. Again, this seems unlikely, and both of these solutions leave him alone for most of the day.
  • We could find a place to board him.

I can’t really imagine him being happy with any of these solutions. I wish we could just ask him what he’d want to do.

If I get a vote, I vote for option 3. I am a total cat person. My three (12yo, 12yo, 2yo) totally rule my world and love me very much, but they also don’t give a flying fig when I go away. I often housesit for my friends who have dogs, which means that my cats are alone all day. Each day I’ll pop by and feed them, clean their box, hang out for a few minutes and all is right with the world. If I go out of town for two whole days, I just leave them with a bunch of food and water, and they’re fine. I think they hardly notice I’m gone. If I’m gone more than 3 days/2 nights, then I have someone else pop in on them and take care of their needs. Again, they’re always like “what, you were gone? oh. neat.”

Now maybe your cat has a completely different personality than mine, so perhaps he wouldn’t deal.

If it was more than one cat, I would definitely go for option 3. The problem is, it’s just him. He gets lonely, poor little tiger.

It actually looks like option 2 will carry the day, so far.
