Good graphics, lousy spell-check

Apparently, nobody is proof-reading the boxes at nVidia when they send out their video cards. On the box of the video card I picked up on eBay in a (failed) troubleshooting step for A.’s desktop machine, I counted nine different spelling and grammatical errors, some of which can’t possibly have escaped someone’s notice. Apparently this box contains, for example, a “Giaphice Acceleiatai” which is “The Definition of Perfpormance”. Its specifications, however, “is subject to chang without notice.”

It’s almost as though the text was retyped for the box by, oh, someone who doesn’t speak a language which uses the Latin alphabet? Maybe, hmm, someone who doesn’t actually work for nVidia? What are the odds that a legitimate technology company would let such a packaging disaster out the door?

The repair manual for my old 79 subaru had a procedure which started, “Step one - open the food.” For years I thought that this was a Japanese Zen thing. Really, there is no reason to repair the car on an empty stomach, is there? Later I was disappointed when I realized that Step one should have read ‘open the hood!’

So I work as a network and database troubleshooter for a number of small businesses in Juneau, Alaska. One of the places I troubleshoot at bought a video card off of Ebay, I think I got the exact same box you’re talking about. The package was for a FX5200 128MB PCI graphics card. The art on the box was fairly generic and out of focus. It also had the “Giaphice Acceleiatai” as well as “The Definiton of Perfpormance The Standard for Quality” I should have just not opened the box at the point and had it sent back. Against better judgement I opened the box and ended up with a $50 paperweight. Couldn’t get a hold of the Ebay seller so ended up with nothing but a box that looks like someone used a $5 whatever langauge to English dictionary to convert everything over. I have it taped to my wall of shame as a reminder of how saving a few $$ can often bite you in the arse.

haha, I got the same box for a GeForce FX 5200 128MB PCI card. Purchased it off Ebay, and it was DOA. I’m keeping the box, I already put it up on my wall of shame. Ah well, next time I’ll think twice about trying to save a buck or two.

It looks like that $5 whatever to English dictionary just didn’t cut it… or maybe they tried using babelfish.
