Telescoping perspective

I have to admit, my perspective on these historic charms is probably a bit warped.

I remember the comic book store in the basement of the Customs House, for example. And the cats, not the governor’s library, in the reading room.

But I still love reading stuff like this, and giving depth to the memories.

Growing up, I was regaled with stories from my father about the hotel that my great-grandfather ran at Old Orchard Beach. He told stories of summering there with all his cousins. In my mid-teen’s, he took us up there and showed us where it stood. The spot was a parking lot, and not a big one. It was quite a let down (one word?).

So, times do change. Not always for the better. But these places live on in our memories. Often differently from the truth, but no less real or truthful to us.
